Here is a snapshot of what we will be doing in kindergarten this year:
In September, the children learn to identify and create shapes. They also learn to print their first name "the kindergarten way" (a capital letter at the beginning, followed by lower case letters, using the proper pencil grip). Children are given an overview of the alphabet and are taught the proper formation of letters Tt Pp Nn Aa as well as the sound these letters represent. Students learn about their new classroom and school through thematic units on bears and gingerbread men.
In October, our science unit this month is "Fall". The children learn the proper formation of many more letters as well as the sounds these letters represent. Children are engaged in lessons that involve the sequencing of events, rhyming words and identifying left and right. In math the focus is on numbers 0-10, (the formation as well as counting one to one). In October the children begin to learn the kindergarten sight words and read from little books that they take home and keep in their special book box.
In November, the children learn the proper formation of even more letters as well as the sounds the letters represent. In math, children create patterns (ie: ^ * ^ * ^ *), sort by characteristics, and review numbers 0-10. "Where We Live" and the "First Thanksgiving" are our social studies units.
In December, the children complete the unit on the alphabet by learning the formation of the remaining letters of the alphabet and the sounds they represent. In math, we focus on numbers 11-20. Our social studies units are "Me", and "Family Celebrations".
In January, the kindergarten students review the proper formation of all the letters capital and lower case. They learn to sound out 3 letter short vowel words and continue to learn new sight words. They practice printing lowercase letters from memory. They begin spending time in Writer's Workshop constructing words, sentences and stories. In math, the children review numbers 0-20. Kindergarten children learn math addition facts to 5.They learn to "count on" and "count back". In science and social studies our focus is the concept of day and night, winter and our five senses.
In February, children in room 24 continue sounding out 3 letter, short vowel words, and reading sight words. They practice printing upper case letters and numbers from memory. The children spend time writing words, sentences and stories independently. In math, the children master addition facts to 5. In science, the children enjoy lessons on the five senses, and teeth.
In March, the children continue to read words, sentences and stories. They continue to write sentences and stories. In math the children master subtraction facts to 5. They master printing numbers 0-20 from memory. In science, the children celebrate the season of spring. They also learn about plants. At the end of March, the students head outside to our backyard. There they find raised beds to plant a garden. It is a Hilltop tradition that my kindergarten students plant a "salad garden". During the next two months, the children water their gardens and care for their plants. In June, the garden is ready for harvest and the children pick and make their own salads.
In April, the children continue to improve their reading and writing skills. In math, the children measure and learn to decompose numbers 0-10. In science, the children tend to their salad garden and note the daily growth of their vegetables. They also enjoy a unit on bugs.
In May, the children are introduced to the concept of long vowels and blends. The children read and write, add and subtract and learn about animals native to Ohio, zoo animals, farm animals, and ocean life. We celebrate warm spring days and the coming of summer. We say good-bye at the end of the month, after a fun filled week including First Grade Day, Bubble Day, Salad Day and Picnic Day!
