Clothing:
- As you begin to shop for school clothes, please make sure that the clothing your choose for your child is "child friendly" to wear.
- Your child will need to be able to manage his/her own clothing when using the restroom and going outside for recess.
- Please ask your child to practice using those new pant snaps, belts, tights, zippers, buttons etc. especially those that need to be used when visiting the restroom. If your child can not operate his/her clothing independently while using the restroom, please consider selecting something else for him/her to wear.
- Please label all coats and jackets with your child's name. If the coat was worn by an older sibling/cousin/friend, please cross out his/her name and replace it with your child's name. You would be very surprised how many similar coats we have in kindergarten. Names on coats/jackets are a must as children tend to forget what coat they wore or if in fact they wore a coat at all to school.
- Please consider sending your child to school wearing sneakers or tennis shoes. While work boots, sandals, high heels, fashion boots, ballet slippers etc. may be fun/cool/cute/a fashion statement, these shoes are difficult for the activities we engage in each day. Students who wear sneakers or tennis shoes are happier children in school.
- Socks must be worn with all shoes. (It's a school rule.)
- Our school is air conditioned in the fall and spring, and heated in the winter. While the school makes every effort to keep a constant temperature of 70 degrees, it does fluctuate. If you dress your child in a sweater or sweatshirt, please ask your child to wear a school shirt underneath in case your child gets warm and wants to take off his/her top layer of clothing.
- The children will be going outside in the snow. When you see boots in the store, consider picking them up. By the time it snows, the stores typically are out of boots (or at the very least, your child's size in the color he/she wants).!
- Winter coats that come with fall/spring jackets snapped inside are difficult and terribly frustrating for children to manage on a daily basis. Please consider not purchasing this type of coat this year.
Daily Folder:
Please check your child's folder each day. I will use this folder to send home notes, homework and school & community flyers. Please take out all your children's papers and school flyers nightly. If you have a question or concern, please place a note in your child's folder. I will check your child's folder daily.
Conferences:
Parents are invited to attend two parent/teacher conferences held in November and February. I am happy to meet with parents any time during the school year also.
Homework:
Your child will receive a homework assignment sheet every Friday.
Kindergarten homework reinforces skills taught in school and is designed to take 5-10 minutes each night, Monday-Thursday.
Kindergarten students receive formal report cards in November, January, April and June. Informal progress reports are sent home often.
Lunch Time in Kindergarten:
Your child will eat lunch from 10:45-11:15 each day.
He/She will have the opportunity to buy lunch or bring a packed lunch to school.
- Buying Lunch: Please learn more about our school lunch program, our unique payment system and the monthly lunch menu by going to the home page for Canfield Local Schools and selecting the School Lunch System and Menu button. Please set up a lunch account for your child before the first day of school. This will allow your child to purchase milk or lunch during the year.
- Packing Lunch: Your child will have the opportunity to bring his/her drink to school or purchase milk in our cafeteria. Please go to the Canfield Local Schools' home page and select the School Lunch System and Menu button for information about purchasing milk.
Consider placing 2 napkins in your child's lunchbox and teaching him/her to lay one napkin down on the table as a placemat. Just like in a restaurant, tables are cleaned often at Hilltop, however, just like in a restaurant, you would not want your child to lay his/her sandwich on the table, (or any other food item). :)
There will be 2 lunch adies to help your child open containers and bags however, your child will be happier if he/she can do it himself/herself. The best part of being independent is that one doesn't have to wait for help to open a treat!
If your child can not open a pre-package item independently, consider repacking it in a manner that will allow your child to be independent. (This is especially true for chips and prepackaged cookies.) There will be 90 children in the cafeteria enjoying lunch and many will also need adult assistance so your child may have to wait to have his/her treats opened. Hungry children sometimes get overwhelmed waiting for help.
Go-Gurts....please consider saving them for treats at home and not sending this yogurt treat to school. (When you see me, feel free ask me why. :)
Consider asking your child to practice eating a school packed lunch at home. Have your child practice laying out his/her lunch on a napkin. Have your child practice opening up his/her lunch bags too.
